IU establishes Jeff Schwarz Center for Neuro-Oncology Research with $15 million investments
The center will unite researchers and clinicians to pursue new brain cancer treatments. IU has established the Jeff Schwarz Center for Neuro-Oncology Research in Indianapolis, Indiana, with $15 million investments from the family of late IU alumnus Jeff Schwarz, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2022 and died in 2023. The center will provide 12,000 square feet of dedicated research space in the IU School of Medicine’s Medical Education and Research Building and will also include the recruitment of two neuro-oncology researchers. The $10 million gift from the late Schwarz family is supported by the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, with another $5 million contributed by the school of Medicine. The new center will recruit researchers, finance their work and transform laboratory findings into clinical trials. The goal of a clinical trial is to give hope to patients with less than 33% of the five-year relative survival rate for brain and nervous system cancers.
