IndyCar has flirted with the idea of an international race for years, and in 2027, it will finally get one. IndyCar has agreed to a 10-year deal to race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain, named the Grand Prix of Barcelona, starting on July 18, 2027. This will be IndyCar's first international race outside North America since 2013 and its first in Europe since 2007. Since Penske Entertainment bought IndyCar before the 2020 season, the series has been reluctant to race outside its home continent. The move was seen as a strategic move for Penske, CEO and president Mark Miles, who believes there are opportunities to grow the series and benefit from its drivers and historic fan bases. The decision to add the Grand Grand Prix to Barcelona was seen by executives from the Circuit of Barcelona- Catalunya as an opportunity for growth within the series.
