Editorial: Georgia Street makeover delivers. Let’s keep up the momentum.
We urge city officials — and whoever might be leading the city after next year’s election — to keep completion of the Georgia Street project on the priority list. It’s a winner. The city of Indianapolis has opened the first section of a three-block overhaul of Georgia Street between the Indiana Convention Center and Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The first block, a pedestrian-only space between Illinois Street and Capitol Avenue, features pet-friendly turf, tables and chairs, benches, performances, and lighting. The space is expected to be used for events such as concerts, rallies, parties, and more. The city has also begun accepting proposals for the remake of the eastern-most block, between Pennsylvania and Meridian streets. The timing for redevelopment of the center block is still to be determined, but the planned redevelopment of former Circle Center Mall could impact that area.
