INDIANAPOLIS — "Weather perfection" is an apt description of what's outside this afternoon in central Indiana. Hard to argue with sun, 70s, comfortable dewpoints, and a light and variable wind. It's simply fantastic anytime of year — let alone here in the second week of June.
It's a stark contrast of the expected chilly start we had this morning, too! Impressive low temperatures ranged from 38° in Lafayette and Crawfordsville to a near record-tying low of 44° in Indianapolis. That's the coldest this late in the season in Indy since 1992 and one of only 11 days with a low of 44° or colder in June/July. Anyway you slice those numbers, it was a rare air this morning.
It will also likely be the coldest temperatures here until the end of summer. We continue to advertise miserably hot and humid air to build next week. But before we get there, the Muggy Meter remains comfortable this evening and Wednesday.
Lows won't be as chilly tonight but still comfortably cool in the 50s. Though highs Wednesday will be noticeably warmer in the mid-80s, dewpoints remain pleasant in the 50s.
The Muggy Meter begins to creep into the humid range with a southwest wind on Thursday. This delivers hotter air of highs near 90°. An approaching cool front will trigger widely scattered late-day storms Thursday evening into early Friday morning, which will be our best chance of rain over the next week.
A muggy Friday morning gives way to dropping Muggy Meter, with a pleasant northerly wind Friday afternoon. The less humid air lingers into Saturday, with seasonably warm highs in the mid/upper 80s.
We're still advertising a top 5 hottest Father's Day in Indianapolis on Sunday, with highs well in the 90s. The hot air teams up with much muggier air into next week for uncomfortable, if not dangerous, heat for several days. There will be a daily chance of pop-up storms, but right now, we don't expect widespread rain.
