INDIANA (WFFT) - Parkview Health will no longer be scheduling patients whose health plans do not include Parkview as in-network care.

David Jeans, senior vice president of payor, employer and health plan strategies for Parkview Health, released a statement explaining the decision.

It explained that when employers or health insurers set up health plans, they select which facilities and providers are in-network, and patients may not always understand which providers and benefits are in their plan, leading to confusion when bills are received for out-of-network care.

"After careful consideration, Parkview Health is implementing a change intended to protect patients from large bills for out-of-network care that their insurance will not pay," the statement read.

Jeans continued, "We will soon begin a process to stop scheduling patients with health plans that do not include Parkview in their network or contract with Parkview. We estimate this change will impact approximately 1% of patients and will not affect uninsured patients or those seeking emergency care."

The changes will take place over several months.

Jeans said Parkview has begun notifying affected patients and will work closely with them to transition their care as needed.

People impacted by the change who wish to remain with Parkview have the opportunity to change their healthcare plan during the next open enrollment.

Patients insured through their employer are encouraged to contact their human resources or benefits team about options to continue care with Parkview.

Jeans concluded, "We continue to advocate for our patients, and all healthcare consumers, as part of our commitment to price transparency and helping patients better understand and prepare for healthcare costs. We encourage all patients to make informed decisions about their care, including selecting a health plan that best meets their needs and helps reduce their costs."
