More Indiana counties are moving to restrict or halt data center development due to concerns about electricity use, water consumption and environmental impacts. At least 50 counties have now enacted some form of restriction on data centers, according to Indiana University's Environmental Resilience Institute. This includes 33 counties with moratoriums, 14 with regulatory ordinances, and four communities where data centers are not permitted. The increase comes as demand for large-scale data centers grows, driven in part by artificial intelligence. Concerns have grown about the strain on electrical systems, water resources, land and infrastructure, and noise, air pollution, and long-term employment.
