Indiana ‘green-lights’ new roadway worker safety initiative - Safety+Health Magazine

More than 300 wearable devices featuring flashing green lights will be distributed to workers around the state. Indiana's Department of Transportation (INDOT) has launched a new safety program, Project Greenlight, which aims to improve roadway worker safety during visibility is limited. The initiative involves distributing 375 Guardian Angel safety lights to highway workers across the state, which when worn with a high-visibility vest, they make workers 89% more visible to drivers. The lights, which display a flashing pattern, were piloted in three areas in 2025 in areas patrolled by INDOT’s Hoosier Helper safety service workers and with highway maintenance crews throughout the state. Workers are encouraged to use the lights during nighttime operations and inclement weather conditions. Researchers have found that drivers are more likely to slow down when they see these green lights in work zones.
