This being Indiana, it felt like spring for a little while, then it felt like winter again, giving Hoosiers everywhere something to complain about — but no one told the cherry blossom trees.

Workers were delighted to leave the office last week and take in that most gorgeous of spring-has-sprung sights, the Yoshino cherry trees blooming in White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis.

According to a press release, Indiana’s capital received 52 of the cherry trees from Japan in 2012, a gift marking the 100th anniversary of the blooming of the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C.

In that community, the trees had been a gift of friendship from the island nation in 1912.

In Japan, where “sakura” viewing is a major cultural event each year, the blossoms symbolize both the beauty and the fleeting nature of life.

And in Indiana, hopefully also the fleeting nature of winter. For good this time.
