Fat Strikes Back
As weight loss drugs like GLP-1s flood the market, North Carolina's plus-size activists aim to make their own splash. Durant-based activist and entrepreneur Suzy Hooker hosted a plus-size pool party at a Fat Lake Day in late August, marking the end of Fat Liberation Month. The event was held in an effort to make a splash for fat liberation amid a mainstream culture awash in marketing for GLP-1 drugs. Hooker also shared details about a new app she was developing to help people navigate a world that has become more contemptuous of people in larger bodies. The party was held at a private pool in southeast Durham and was led by Krista Nabar, known as Dr. Sexy Fat. The food and fitness industry around the world has seen a boom since the 1930s, with many coming from around the globe to shed pounds.
