Russiaville organizations aim for a mile-long line dance

It’s time to brush off your dancing shoes. The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library and the Russiaville Community Outreach Board are planning a mile-long line dance on April 13. The event will coincide with the Gene Parks 5K and the final day of National Library Week. Line dancers will stretch from KHCPL’s Russiaville location to a Russiaville Lions Club. While the line dance is free to participate, registration costs $25 for a Gene Parks5K or a one-mile fun run. Proceeds from the 5K will benefit the Carl Koontz Scholarship and the fun run proceeds will go to Ainsley's Angels, an organization that helps people participate in athletic events regardless of physical ability. Additionally, Scouts will host a pancake brunch at the Lion's Club from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

It’s time to brush off your dancing shoes.

A couple of Russiaville organizations hope to form a mile-long line dance next month.

The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library and the Russiaville Community Outreach Board are organizing the dance.

It will take place April 13 to coincide with the Gene Parks 5K and the final day of National Library Week.

Line dancers will stretch from KHCPL’s Russiaville location to the Russiaville Lion’s Club. People can join the dance at either end of the line dance, and organizers encourage showing up in groups.

The line dance is free to participate in.

However, if you’re more interested in joining the Gene Parks 5K, registration costs $25. There will also be a one-mile fun run, which will cost $15. If you want to participate in both, registration will cost $30. Registration will take place from 8:30-9:15 a.m., the fun run will begin at 9:15 a.m. and the 5K will start at 10 a.m.

Proceeds from the 5K will support the Carl Koontz Scholarship and the fun run proceeds will go to Ainsley’s Angels, an organization that helps people participate in athletic events regardless of physical ability.

You can sign up for the race online at townofrussiaville.com/5k-registration.

Additionally, Scouts will host a pancake brunch at the Russiaville Lion’s Club from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Meals cost $10 for adults and $6 for children 3-12 years old. Money raised from the brunch will be put toward a Scouts trip to Iceland.

In case you’re wondering, Guinness World Records measures the largest line dances by participants. The current record sits at 18,431 and was set Nov. 7, 2015, in Xianghe, China. The participants danced for 5 minutes and 22 seconds.

Based on the U.S. Census Bureau‘s annual population estimate, it would take approximately 22% of Howard County’s population to beat the record.
