IBJ Podcast: Waterman family expanding annual fall festival, preserving farming legacy

The descendants of Bruce and Carol Waterman are leaning even more heavily on agritourism, even as most Indianapolis-based farms have long since been supplanted by housing and highways. The seventh generation of the Waterman family, who have farmed in the southeast side of Indianapolis for decades, has expanded their five-week Fall Festival at Waterman's Family Farm. The farm, founded in 1978, attracts visitors from across central Indiana for you-pick produce and features playgrounds, corn mazes, and amusement rides. Bruce and Carol Waterman, who had a passion for farming, passed away several years ago, are now closely involved in running the attraction. The festival, which attracted about 15,000 ticketed attendees last year, is expected to exceed that total this year. Scott Waterman and Taylor Waterman co-owner of Waterman’s Family Farm, discuss the growth of the festival and dedication to promoting agriculture in Indianapolis. They also discuss the challenges of running a seasonal business and their dedication to agritourism.
